What are the States of Mexico?

Mexico is a federal republic of 31 states and Mexico City. Each state has its own constitution, governor and congress.

  • Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821.
  • The 1824 constitution turned the colonial intendancies into the first 19 states.
  • Others were created later: Guerrero in 1849, Hidalgo and Morelos in 1869, and Baja California in 1952.
  • Baja California Sur and Quintana Roo, the newest states, followed in 1974.
  • Mexico City, formerly the Federal District, gained its own constitution in 2016 but isn't a state.

Current quiz contains 31 states: Aguascalientes, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Colima, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Morelos, México, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Yucatán, Zacatecas.

Mexico City was removed from this quiz because it's not a state itself. It's a federal entity.
