What are the Regions of Ghana?

Regions are Ghana's top level of local government, each headed by a regional minister. This quiz shows the 10 regions Ghana had until 2018.

  • The regions grew out of the territories of the British Gold Coast colony: the Gold Coast, Ashanti, the Northern Territories and British Togoland.
  • They became regions when Ghana became independent in 1957.
  • Brong-Ahafo was separated from Ashanti in 1959.
  • The Upper Region was split into Upper East and Upper West in 1983.
  • After referendums in 2018, four regions were split to make 16: Brong-Ahafo became Bono, Bono East and Ahafo; Savannah and North East came from Northern; Oti from Volta; and Western North from Western.

Current quiz contains 10 regions: Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Central, Eastern, Greater Accra, Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Volta, Western.
