What are the Counties of Norway?
Counties (fylker) are Norway's regional level of government. They run upper secondary
schools, regional roads, public transport and regional planning.
- The word fylke comes from Old Norse.
- The modern system began in 1662, when Denmark–Norway created districts called amt.
- These were renamed fylker in 1919.
- This quiz shows the 19 counties Norway had for most of the 20th century.
- The two Trøndelag counties merged in 2018, and a 2020 reform cut the total to 11.
- In 2024 several merged counties split again, leaving 15.
