What are the States of Brazil?

Brazil is a federation of 26 states and the Federal District, which contains the capital, Brasília. Each state has an elected governor and assembly.

  • The states have their roots in the hereditary captaincies Portugal set up in the 1530s.
  • They became provinces after independence in 1822, and states when Brazil became a republic in 1889.
  • Acre was acquired from Bolivia in 1903 and became a state in 1962.
  • Mato Grosso do Sul was split from Mato Grosso in 1977.
  • Tocantins was created from Goiás in 1988, the same year Amapá and Roraima became states.
  • The Federal District was created in 1960, when the capital moved from Rio de Janeiro.
