What are the Counties of Croatia?

Croatia has 20 counties (županije) plus the City of Zagreb, which is both a city and a county. Each county has an elected assembly and a prefect.

  • Counties date back to the medieval Croatian kingdom.
  • They were used in Croatia-Slavonia under Austria-Hungary.
  • They were abolished in 1922 under the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.
  • After independence in 1991, a 1992 law brought them back, and they began work in 1993.
  • Their boundaries were adjusted in 1997.
  • Most are named after their main town or a historical region, such as Istria, Dalmatia and Slavonia.
