What are the States of Austria?

Austria is a federal republic of nine states (Bundesländer), each with its own parliament (Landtag) and governor.

  • Most states grew out of the historic crown lands of the Habsburg monarchy, such as Styria, Carinthia and Tyrol.
  • Salzburg, once ruled by its prince-archbishops, became part of Austria in 1816.
  • After Austria-Hungary collapsed in 1918, these lands formed the Republic of Austria.
  • Burgenland joined from Hungary in 1921, and Vienna was separated from Lower Austria in 1922.
  • The states were abolished under Nazi rule and re-established in 1945.
